King's Pawn (Excerpt from Nemeses Unexpected)

The second volume of The Dragon Lord Chronicles is now available on Amazon!

"Lord Gerald, I sensed hesitation and discomfort. What were you thinking?"

Gerald thought for a moment.

"Come, Gerald, you know you may speak freely."

"All right then. My king, I mean no disrespect, but I have felt like a piece in a game since we arrived. Half the time I don't know what's expected of me, and I'm not often sure who is playing at what game. Dragons are easier to understand."

"I can't argue with that," Murdoch agreed. Folkvar nodded and smiled.

King Donald continued. "I can see your point, Gerald. An apt comparison would be a pawn in a chess game."

"I almost said that."

"You should have! But patience, my lord. We have plans to get you to the other side of the board and make you a queen."

"That will go over well in the barracks. And how will I explain it to Sally?"

Murdoch and Folkvar roared with laughter.

"We won't make you dress like one," Donald promised. "But you'll have power and mobility. Wait and see."
