Writing 101 - The Pronoun Avenger

I was momentarily distracted while reading an otherwise excellent blog when I came across the following introductory clause.

"The above exchange between my mom and I..."

It's easy enough to write such things, but we need to catch them when editing and revising. Read it again. Does it look correct to you? It's not. That final word - "I" - should be "me". Why? Because it's the object of the preposition "between".

If you're still not convinced, try substituting in both "we" and "us" for "mom and I".

  1. "The above exchange between we..."

  2. "The above exchange between us..."

Hopefully you recognize that #2 is correct. "I" corresponds to "we" (subjects) and "me" corresponds to "us" (objects). Since "us" fits here and "we" does not, "me" is the correct word to use.
